For the second day in a row, traffic on the Chain of Rocks bridge ground to a halt due to a motor vehicle accident. The bridge allows traffic to cross over the Mississippi River between Illinois and Missouri.
According to an StlToday.com report, two tractor-trailers collided this morning while travelling eastbound on the Illinois side the bridge. The accident stopped traffic for nearly three hours. Yesterday, a multiple car accident near the same area. In that crash, a semi-truck crashed into another truck, which then collided with another pickup truck.

Often times during car accidents, children can be in the car. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, nearly 250,000 children are injured every year in car accidents. Car accidents are also the leading cause of acquired disability (e.g., brain injury, paralysis, etc.) for children nationwide. Thus, when children are in the car of the victim of an accident, they become a potential plaintiff against the person who caused the accident. This means that when settlement time rolls around the child will also have a claim that needs to be settled. While this might just seem like a minor detail, settlements involving minors have major requirements before they can be enforced.

A single blow to the head ended the life of a soccer referee in Salt Lake City, Utah. The incident occurred during a recreational league when one of the players who was called for a foul began arguing with the referee, Ricardo Portillo. The argument became heated, and the player (who was much bigger than Portillo) punched him in the face.
Portillo initially said he was fine, but then he became dizzy and started vomiting blood. Portillo complained that his face and back hurt, and that he felt nauseous. An ambulance was called, but Portillo fell into a coma once he reached the hospital.

With the Memorial Day weekend looming, law enforcement agencies in Southern Illinois are gearing up to increase patrols. Their main goal is to promote public safety because drunk driving accidents can lead to fatalities and life-changing injuries.
A crash involving a Jefferson County man exemplifies this danger, as a one-car accident yesterday left him badly injured.

In 2011, at least 23% of auto accidents involved one of the drivers using a cell phone at the time of accident. Increases in technology have led to easy access to resources such as messaging, navigation, internet, emails, etc. Devices such as cell phones, navigation systems, iPads and other tablets, and miniature laptops are so small that they are easy to carry around and use in the car. The problem arises when these devices start getting used in the car while driving. In fact, in 2010, nearly 20% of all accidents involved some form ofdistracted driving.

A motorcycle rider from Fairfield was injured yesterday when he was involved in accident with a pickup truck yesterday. According to reports from the Illinois State Police, the rider was travelling westbound on Route 15 when the truck reportedly pulled out in front of him, causing him to crash into the truck. The force of the crash caused him to be thrown from his bike.
The rider was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Meanwhile, the driver of the truck was cited for failure to yield.
Motorcycle riders are a tell-tale sign of spring after a long winter. It is seems like there is an annual ritual for drivers to get used to seeing motorcycles again. Nevertheless, drivers have a duty to keep their sights out for bikes.

Head injuries have been a hot topic. The NHL and NFL have placed increased attention on concussions, head injuries, and the long term effects of these injuries. While sports like hockey and football provide ample opportunity for a person to suffer a traumatic head injury, car accidents are a leading cause of concussions. Concussions have a variety of symptoms and varying levels of severity. Although it may just seem like you have been bumped on the head, concussions have long term effects that may not become immediately apparent. Sometimes, it takes weeks and months for the effects of a head injury to fully set in.
Despite much of the attention being on head injuries in contact sports, car accidents are actually the leading cause of head injuries. Approximately 28% of traumatic brain injuries are caused by car accidents.

Fitness has become a huge part of our society. An increasing number of Americans are buying gym memberships and personal trainers. As part of these memberships, the gym/trainers almost unanimously have members sign contracts, which include a clause in which the member agrees not to hold the gym or trainer liable for any injury sustained at the gym or injuries resulting from the training. These clauses are called waivers of liability. But, are they even worth the paper they are printed on?
Most gyms have large numbers of available personal trainers, some of whom do not even have college degrees or a proper education in human anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. The large amount of personal trainers competing against each other and the demand for results has caused personal trainers to push the gym members harder than ever before. For this, trainers demand upwards of $65 an hour (on the low end) and gyms demand high monthly fees.

News of concussion injury lawsuits against the National Football League and helmet maker Ridell have not made headlines since Super Bowl XLVII. However, a jury in Colorado reached a verdict in a defective products case that sends an ominous warning about future concussion related products liability cases.
The case stems from a family whose son had suffered severe head injuries during a high school football practice in 2008. They claimed that Ridell failed to warn people wearing its helmets of the dangers posed by repeated blows to the head (which is part and parcel of playing football).

A massive recall has been declared from Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, and Honda. Approximately 3.4 million cars total are being recalled worldwide due to faulty airbags that can rupture when deployed. If in an accident, the airbag for the front passenger seat may not inflate correctly because of a defect in the propellant used in the airbag inflator. As a result, there is a risk of fires starting or of passengers being seriously injured or killed.
Toyota announced it was recalling 1.7 million cars, including some of its most popular models: Corolla, Matrix, and Tundra. Honda is recalling more than 1.1 million vehicles, citing that the faulty airbags put passenger's safety at risk. Nissan has declared a recall for approximately 480,000 cars, and Mazda has recalled roughly 45,000 cars.
